Afghan Women’s Protest Movement in Exile Calls for International Fact-Finding Mission Following Taliban Arrests of Women in Kabul

The Afghan Women’s Protest Movement in Exile has issued a statement demanding the urgent deployment of an international fact-finding mission to investigate recent human rights violations and arbitrary arrests of women and girls in Kabul by the Taliban.

In the statement released today, Monday, July 22 (Saratan 30), the movement expressed “deep concern and outrage” over the recent arrests, condemning them as unlawful, misogynistic, and a serious threat to women's rights. The group called on the international community to respond immediately and responsibly to the Taliban's actions.

According to the statement, the Taliban have arrested several young women from different districts of the capital, Kabul, without judicial orders or informing their families. These arrests were reportedly carried out based solely on the women’s clothing or on suspicion that they might participate in future protests.

The movement described these actions as clear violations of fundamental human and civil rights and emphasized that such measures are part of a systematic policy aimed at eliminating women from public life in Afghanistan.

The statement also noted that these arrests violate key articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), particularly:

Article 3 – The right to life, liberty, and personal security,

Article 5 – Freedom from torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment,

Article 9 – Freedom from arbitrary arrest, detention, or exile,

Article 19 – Freedom of opinion and expression,

Article 20 – The right to peaceful assembly and association.

The Afghan Women’s Protest Movement in Exile urged the United Nations and international human rights bodies to take concrete steps to hold the Taliban accountable for these ongoing violations.
